MARKET
2017 - 2018

In this work, Zhanna Kadyrova reproduces a typical food selling spot with all its necessary elements: a table, mechanical scales, vegetable boxes, a plastic chair and a glow-lamp illuminating from inside the metal frame covered with a blue tent. A set of goods is common for any street retailer: watermelons, zucchini, eggplant, chicken eggs, hams, and sausages. For this one, the author uses heavy building materials – ceramic tiles, cement, concrete and natural stone. This is a site-specific installation related to the context of an art fair as a venue for market relations.

The first time the project was presented as an intervention in sterile atmosphere of the ART Monte Carlo fair in Monaco, April 2017. Kadyrova committed a symbolic desertion: she broke the art market rules of forming prices for art objects by selling her work by weight accordingly to the price tag 1 gram = 1 euro.  Presumably, the project travels to art fairs in different countries. The price per gram equals one local money unit of the country, where the performance Market takes place at the moment.

The project is a continuation of the Market series. In detail, Kadyrova reproduces a market stand with different kinds of fish and all its other attributes: salmon and white sea-fish steaks, oyster shells, and transparent glass ice. To play off the shapes, colors, and textures of seafood, the artist uses regular construction materials: ceramic tiles, cement, and concrete.

At the presentation, the works were sold for €1 per 1 gram. The project was commissioned by the 33rd Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana and exhibited in the DobraVaga gallery which previously used to function as a fish department of a central market.
