HOUSE of CULTURE 2023

House of Culture (2023) is an installation that intertwines material evidence of war with deep cultural memory. Created from fragments of a building in the Kherson region that was severely damaged by shelling, it incorporates an original chandelier salvaged from the House of Culture in the city of Beryslav, which was under Russian occupation until late 2022. This work continues the artist’s earlier gesture in the Carpathian Mountains, where she transformed a modest mountain house into her own “palace of culture.” Despite the humble and deteriorated state of both structures, they resonate monumentally.

In this project, Kadyrova reclaims the notion of the “house of culture” for the Ukrainian people, turning it into a site for the preservation and restoration of cultural heritage. It stands as a monument to all destroyed Ukrainian cultural institutions and, at the same time, as a beacon of light — a symbol of the resilience and survival of art and culture in times of war.

The work speaks to the broader Ukrainian community, evoking collective memory, loss, and the enduring capacity to recover without losing one’s identity.
